Confession: I’m writing these on Sunday. My goal is to write these in advance OR at least the day of from now on.
Today’s awesome thing is: Minecraft
What is Minecraft? The simple explanation is: it’s a game, where you can mine and build stuff. But it’s so much more than that. There are two modes of gameplay: single player, and multi-player. The latter version takes place on a server. When you start a new game, an entirely new world is created. At first, it’s small. But the more you explore, the more world is created. This is pretty awesome for someone who has a bad case of wanderlust, but doesn’t have the finances to go exploring out here in the real world.
“Wait, but what’s the goal?” you might ask. ”Sure you can explore. But’s the point of this game?” Ah, that’s the really cool thing. Minecraft is what’s referred to as a “sandbox” game. That means that the goal is what you decide it is. If you want to build a replica of the Starship Enterprise, or re-create Middle Earth, you can. If you want to hop into a boat and explore the world (making it bigger) then you can. If you want to farm, you can. If you want to sit on top of a floating mountain and watch the days pass by, you can. I could go on, but I’m sure you get the point. It’s terribly immersive, and more than a little addicting. I highly recommend it!
The game is currently in Beta testing, but is supposed to get its official release later this year. If you want a full license, now’s the time to get it, as the price will go up when the full version is released. I bought it, and I have no regrets. It’s the best $21 I’ve spent in a long time.
